Welcome to the River Outpost, located in Bakersville WNC on the Toe River, the headwaters for the wild and scenic Nolichucky! Here you can find gear and gifts for your next adventure. Our retail items include a bit of the 10 hiking essentials like: sunscreen, water & snacks, dry bags, ponchos, headlamps, light up tent stakes, chums, sunglasses holders, river shoes and bug spray. The river outpost also sells youth snorkel masks, antique barnwood hand stenciled signs and some precious stones and jewelry.
We sell boats/kayaks too!! Guests can try it before you buy it, the luxury Cadillac of river tubes named the Mini-Cat. This Catamaran style boat, the Mini-Cat can be rented for $50 and has a purchase price of $479. Other larger stores retail the min cat for $500.
This boat is made to function more like a river tube. It is easy to get in and out of, making it a great choice for mobility challenged individuals. It is very stable and easily controlled with a kayak paddle. It is safe for up to class II whitewater.
The super tube has the portability of a tube, with the maneuverability of a small kayak. The Mini Cat Tube is a very stable personal watercraft and will provide great fun on the water for all ages. It is constructed of high-quality commercial grade PVC material (1000 denier) making it a very durable float that glides over rocks with ease and without damage. Think of a tube made from a river rafting material!

Head on down the mountain holler towards the community of Red Hill by the Toe River. We are on the left before the railroad tunnel! The outpost looks like a wagon and has a red “tube parking” sign! If you are coming in from the Asheville area on HWY 19 E be aware GPS could direct you to us via a one lane dirt road along the river. Just drive slowly. When you go through the train tunnel your almost to us. Look for the wagon yurt structure to your right.
Guests can avoid the dirt road by NOT turning on Toe River Road and staying on HWY197. Turn left at the T- intersection, take the first left past Red Hill Gas Station and look for the bigfoot signs for your left turn on Whitson Branch!
Toe River Outpost and Store
Open seasonally from the end of May-October. 9 am -5 pm. Perfect place to stop and shop for last minute day trip, river play or hiking needs.
